finally saw the xx in their 3-player persona live. gorgeous, simple, nostalgic, progressive. well done.

on the roof
April 5, 2010There may still be scattered ice on the Bow and white peaks to the west, but after a long weekend of warm sunny weather, patio beers and random dance parties with pretty things in cute kicks… its kinda hard not to anticipate that summer time, rooftop party vibe.
Nneka – The Uncomfortable Truth
Method Man, Ghostface & Raekwon – Our Dreams
Mayer Hawthorne – Maybe So, Maybe No (the video is fitting)

2009 Best Album: Machinedrum – Want to 1 2 ?
January 7, 2010This selection has made it to the top of my 2009 list not just because of the really great music (of which there is plenty) but more importantly for its completeness. It has been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy an album as an album, something coherent and best enjoyed from start to finish, rather than just a collection of songs you skip through. Of course long hours on the road with nothing else to distract is a slight bias, nevertheless this album stood out amongst many heard this way. Trend makers XLR8R have nailed the description of Machinedrum’s sound, “pop-drenched hip-hop that’s been run through the synthesizer a few dozen times and given a finishing touch by someone like Daft Punk”. For me it was the pop aesthetics that kept me coming back. Below are some highlights off the album and the video for Roll and Feel. Do yourself a favor, use that itunes gift card you got in your stocking and buy this record.
Late Night Operation featuring Theophilus London
Stay tuned for the follow up album Want to 3 4? out on Normex later in 2010. Here is the video for the first single.

long hours and heavy rotation
November 14, 2009To follow up on Camstyles post I have been pulling some long hours in front of the computer these days, working on new projects. Like many of us out there I suffer from music ADD. So when an artist or album comes a long that I play over and over I know it’s something special. Lately I have been getting into indie, blues rock, dream pop, and of course some techno. Here are some artists that have helped me pass the time; in each genre:
INDIE:
Sub pop’s fleet foxes hailing from Seattle, some nice easy listening that can be listened to loud or soft depending on your mood, enjoy…
15 Mykonos (Alternative Version)
04 tiger mountain peasant song
BLUES-ROCK:
The Black Keys, I kept hearing their name everywhere for a few years but never really listened to them. Until I started watching the HBO show ” HUNG” thier song I’ll be your man is the theme song for the show, so I got some of their albums and really enjoyed what I heard.
03 Black Keys – The Big Come Up – I’ll Be Your Man
DREAM POP:
I first heard Silversun Pickups at a friends house the other night. I first I thought it was a new Smashing Pumpkins album then I though it was Girls against Boys. Then I realized I had to have it. Check these guys out… serious!
03 – Growing Old Is Getting Old
04 – It’s Nice To Know You Work Alone
TECHNO:
Shadow dancer, I just love these guys!
01 Cowbois (Original) ( watch out for the drop at 1:30)
13 This Is This 1 ( no need to work dj, this track does everything for you )
ghost on tape: check out the mix this dude just did for xlr8r
Ghosts_On_Tape_-_Magadishu_Night_Life
enjoy guys!

another joker remix
October 14, 2009Joker’s been getting a lot of play on my speakers this summer and here’s another remix that needed his grimy flare. His sound is as sweet as this crushed velvet inside my accordion case.

Dance Dance Dance
May 3, 2009
First heard this song Annie Mac’s Mash Up last week. Always a great place to hear new music and remixes. Buraka Som Sistema does a nice job with Dance Dance Dance by Lykke Li. Very smooth.

synth pop
April 18, 2009
a beautifully pink/melancholy blue pop song here from LA based trio pollyn. if you like sade or tracy thorn you will like this voice! Genevieve Artadi is soothing and sexy and on gave it up, her multi tracked voice dances along overtop wonderfully simple sythn pop. smiles ensue. other tracks on the album echo massive attack or portishead but maybe that’s where comparisons should end. their debut full length this little night has just been released… listen

la roux

mini rap tape
February 14, 2009made a quick little rap tape on thursday after i found some cheap ludacris and miss dynamite records at hot wax. in truth a 50/50 mix of raps and instrumentals, busta rhymes, the clipse, flying lotus and rustie all make a return on this one. as well, we have the spacey production of madlib that is so weird and nice under erykah badu vocals and cheeky diddies from fiddy and mr. oizo. there is even (perhaps untimely) an appearance by chris brown. rnb! wtf?! yes, thanks to hudson mohawke’s OOoops, i’m feeling the rhythm and blues. pop is infectious
