two great shows in two nights
April 23, 2010well make that three if you include tomorrow night getting to dj with panda slap at an art gallery/fund raiser. [aside]
saw Ghislain Poirier last night at HiFi. amazing! it was a typical thursday night (smalltown dj’s disco/electro kid crowd) and Poirier still killed it. I am going to step out a little and say that Poirier is one of the producers/djs who has shapped and inspired the music I have been following for the last 5 years. . .right up there with Diplo and Kode9. they all have their unique sound and are leaders of their trade. all djs that I have followed from their first internet mixes to semi-stardom. this is the third or fourth time I have seen Poirier, and each time it’s a totally new experience. last night he played lots of hits off of his new album ‘running high’. massive sound, heart crunching bass with some high techno/rave/stadium dj bleep bloops to keep the crowd dancing. MC Zulu had control of the mic all night to build hype. A black dude wearing sunglasses in the club mc’ing over a white french canadian seems to drive girls wild – there were always at least five of them on the stage. some critical feedback for Zulu (don’t take too much offence), but you have to stop trying so hard. plus you don’t need to sing on top of every beat all night long, you can let Poirier’s sounds shine through a little bit. MC Zulu was rocking a shirt that said “MC Zulu” and he had a hand held camera that he used to film himself . weird.
GOTAN PROJECT – La Gloria from Ya Basta records on Vimeo.
tonight is none other than RSD, with Sub Swarma. I am really excited about RSD. love of jah light and pretty bright light are two songs that always seem to creep back into my mixes, starting years ago when people started talking about this whole dubstep idea. RSD is Rob Smith from Smith and Mighty and the sounds have matured nicely over the last 15 years. (thanks for the records J + M, I had them pulled out all night). the Smith and Mighty Dj Kicks (1998?) will be blasting in my house all day tomorrow and I can’t wait. here are so tracks to keep you company while I head off to the club. . .

aphex twin live – coachella 08
April 21, 2010two years ago this month, mid afternoon under the big top, on a polo field in the california desert… we were there. one of the most incredible shows i’ve ever been to!
it isn’t that often that you come across a recording of a show that you were actually present for so it has always been fun for me to listen to this set, remembering what the feeling was, the vibe in the crowd, the energy and sound, what the dj was doing. the set started off with everyone hyped but not really knowing what to expect (why is he sitting down?), then a calming and everyone dancing and happy, followed by confusion, still bodies and awkwardness (genius transition @ 23:50!) i’m thinking this is getting good, bring it on…
and then he stood up.

joker
April 6, 2010yeah for the hump day concert, perfect way to break up the work week. joker plays the hifi tomorrow night!
have been pumpin these mashups lately. keeps things light, fun, fresh?
How Purple Can You Go (Ludacris vs Joker & Ginz)
and a new one, released just two days ago. more of that signature 80s dubstep sound with a grime/synth stab edge to it. the original is cool, but i much prefer the VIP mix. a preview for tomorrow night?
ps. welcome back john!

Daedelus!
November 13, 2009Last week Daedelus and James Pants were in town to play the hifi. Letanque bloggers were in attendance and afterwards easily agreed the show ranked among the best of 2009. Sitting through James Pants was a bit painful but well worth the wait as Daedelus smashed it from the get go. No doubt the guy is genius with the bit box he works. Lots of speculations as to what is actually going on there but whatever it is he had us dancing all night and the guy loves what he does.
Here’s the man himself…
and some recognizable tracks he played

11 dub
November 10, 2009Last year for the big decade of dub party they brought in Sister Nancy and this year they have done the one-up booking Mad Professor to mark the 11th anniversary. Yes, Dub at the Pub, Calgary’s long standing all things dub and reggae night down at the Drum and Monkey has been keeping Tuesday’s worthy a night out for 11 years now. Congrats are surely due to DJ’s High & I for doing their thing all these years. Roots reggae on the Drum & Monkey side, hard dancehall to ragga jungle on the Bamboo side, two rooms to vibe and bounce in and out of all night long. I can barely contain excitement writing this, mf MAD PROFESSOR tomorrow night! Get there early kids.
For the life of me I can’t find my copy of the Mad Professor vs. Massive Attack album so here is a video and a few Dub at the Pub inspired tracks.
Sizzla – One Love (Self Evident Remix)
postscript: self evident will be playing over at lord nelson’s this friday.

the rinse out – calgary
October 31, 2009
here are some other calgary dooods running a similar blog to letanque. sweet!
not only do they run a blog, but they actually have a regular night on fridays at a pub called Lord Nelsons. if you are in calgary check it out! the night is called modern math.

capital J
October 30, 2009Toronto’s finest and arguably Canada’s most exciting dnb dj plays Calgary tomorrow! and I’m not talking about Freaky Flow…
CAPITAL J
upp’n the ante is an understatement

Caspa in Calgary
March 8, 2009Last weekend I got a chance to go see Caspa live in Calgary. And he killed it! Playing at Fabric in London the night before, he impressed the crowd by keeping his music loud and his mixes tight! I was proud of Calgary – huge crowd and everyone knew the songs. He rocked an all vinyl show and played all the new bangers and old favorites. The other headliners where locals Slim Pickins/Instinct/Soundboy Murda who definitely represented.
DJ Eleven, also Calgary local, brought the party up a notch (they had to turn her down she was so banging!). Apparently it was her birthday to boot. Check out her facebook page here

Also, check out Excision’s facebook page. . .he played before Caspa and got everyone dancing. Glitch hop, dubstep, drum and bass. . .basically loud music! Way to go for Calgary talent! Hopefully I can find some tracks from these two and get them posted on letanque.

sinden wrap up
September 25, 2008say
ya ya
we went, we danced, we were merry (or horny, whatever the music does for you!)
HA
aside from his pompous, ‘i’m so bored’ attitude, sinden’s set was all hype and non-stop! i didn’t expect that, but it was big
i left happy because among many other bangers… these were played out:
this track is freaking HUUUUUUGE. wow, and to hear it on a proper system!! delicious. if i had a poster of rustie, it would be on my wall. thanks to lorne b for this one.
and
mujava – township funk (ashley beedles africanz on marz re-edit)
sinden played some different remix of this one, but the main melody was still the same. it is the kind of track that won’t leave your head for two days, but in the end you’ll be happy for its company.
