On this snowed in Saturday morning, I thoroughly enjoyed blasting Hudson Mohawke on the Essential Mix along with my morning coffee while whippin up a batch of muffins. Whatever you’re up to when tuning in, do it loud. Enjoy the weekend.

a few favorites
November 20, 2009I randomly stumbled upon a Radiohead remix done by Leftfield. As Idiotheque is definitely my fav Radiohead song, (probably since it’s their most electronic sounding and it also doesn’t leave you feeling sad as Thom Yorke is quite capable of doing) I thought I would share as in my opinion Radiohead and Leftfield are in a class of their own. I saw Radiohead live in concert at Thunderbird stadium ( 2003) and the best way to describe it: It Changes your Life!
To follow, here’s a Leftfield classic from the album entitled Leftism.
and to finish off, here’s a track from Gemmy that reminds me of Leftfield because of the the old electronica beat mixed in new glitchy wonky sounds. Rainbow Roads is included on Mary Ann Hobbs’ new compilation Wild Angels. If you still aren’t tuning into her show on BBC Radio 1 Wednesday nights, I strongly encourage you to start. …and it will get you saying “maximum respect”

Caspa in Calgary
March 8, 2009Last weekend I got a chance to go see Caspa live in Calgary. And he killed it! Playing at Fabric in London the night before, he impressed the crowd by keeping his music loud and his mixes tight! I was proud of Calgary – huge crowd and everyone knew the songs. He rocked an all vinyl show and played all the new bangers and old favorites. The other headliners where locals Slim Pickins/Instinct/Soundboy Murda who definitely represented.
DJ Eleven, also Calgary local, brought the party up a notch (they had to turn her down she was so banging!). Apparently it was her birthday to boot. Check out her facebook page here

Also, check out Excision’s facebook page. . .he played before Caspa and got everyone dancing. Glitch hop, dubstep, drum and bass. . .basically loud music! Way to go for Calgary talent! Hopefully I can find some tracks from these two and get them posted on letanque.

dark glitch-ridden soundscapes
February 22, 2009While their latest album isn’t quite so hot-off-the-presses anymore – Immolate Yourself was released in January – it’s still making obsessively regular appearances in my daily music rotation.
This album kills me. At times painfully beautiful, it pops and drones in a dreamy haze of sound. With a slight nod to shoegaze and hints of – dare I say it – IDM, it sucks you into an otherworld of shadowy ambient pop. It feels like the open road, a barren desert, long trips on a rural train. But it’s also warm, epic, and urban.
“Helen of Troy” and “You Are The Worst Thing In The World” are two of my faves. As is this one:
Tragically, one of the members of this talented duo died the same month this album was released. Charles Cooper will be missed.
