Hyperdub vs. 3024 (Kode9 vs. Martyn Mix)

September 15, 2010

Keeping with the trend of some favorite labels of mine collaborating, check out the Hyperdub vs 3024 Exclusive Mix for Japan. I am slow in posting this, but Martyn’s contributions have been really growing on me. I have listened to the three song mix(Martyn – Is This Insanity (feat Spaceape – Ben Klock mix) TO Detachments – Circles (Martyn Round & Round mix) TO Deadboy – U’ve Been Hurting) on repeat and no matter where I am, no matter what I am working on – it gets me dancing! Kode9 is good as per usual, but if you listened to his DJ Kicks this year you won’t really be surprised. Check it out if you can.

ghostly picks stones throw / stones throw picks ghostly

September 5, 2010

I slept on this one . . .two of my favorite record labels picking their favorite songs from each others labels.  They are nice ones to have to complete the record collection and can be found for free or cheap on the internet if you look around.  Nothing really new in terms of songs, but a nice reminder of why these record labels are the best.

Official Album description: ‘To celebrate the unprecedented achievements of two of our favourite independent US labels we asked Peanut Butter Wolf who runs Stones Throw to pick his favourite tracks from Ghostly’s back catalogue; and in return asked Sam Valenti who runs Ghostly to pick his favourite tracks from Stones Throw’s back catalogue. The result is 20 tracks of some of the most innovative and fiercely independent US hip-hop, electronica, and jazz in the last 10 years.’

two great shows in two nights

April 23, 2010

well make that three if you include tomorrow night getting to dj with panda slap at an art gallery/fund raiser.  [aside]

saw Ghislain Poirier last night at HiFi.  amazing! it was a typical thursday night (smalltown dj’s disco/electro kid crowd) and Poirier still killed it.  I am going to step out a little and say that Poirier is one of the producers/djs who has shapped and inspired the music I have been following for the last 5 years. . .right up there with Diplo and Kode9.  they all have their unique sound and are leaders of their trade.  all djs that I have followed from their first internet mixes to semi-stardom.  this is the third or fourth time I have seen Poirier, and each time it’s a totally new experience. last night he played lots of hits off of his new album ‘running high’.  massive sound, heart crunching bass with some high techno/rave/stadium dj bleep bloops to keep the crowd dancing.   MC Zulu had control of the mic all night to build hype.  A black dude wearing sunglasses in the club mc’ing over a white french canadian seems to drive girls wild – there were always at least five of them on the stage.  some critical feedback for Zulu (don’t take too much offence), but you have to stop trying so hard.  plus you don’t need to sing on top of every beat all night long, you can let Poirier’s sounds shine through a little bit.  MC Zulu was rocking a shirt that said “MC Zulu” and he had a hand held camera that he used to film himself .  weird.

GOTAN PROJECT – La Gloria from Ya Basta records on Vimeo.

tonight is none other than RSD, with Sub Swarma.  I am really excited about RSD.  love of jah light and pretty bright light are two songs that always seem to creep back into my mixes, starting years ago when people started talking about this whole dubstep idea.  RSD is Rob Smith from Smith and Mighty and the sounds have matured nicely over the last 15 years. (thanks for the records J + M, I had them pulled out all night).  the Smith and Mighty Dj Kicks (1998?) will be blasting in my house all day tomorrow and I can’t wait. here are so tracks to keep you company while I head off to the club. . .

moombahton links

April 22, 2010

moombahton. new ‘genre’ generating a lot of hype recently.  there was even a show here in Calgary last friday that I heard was great.  my personal take on it is that it is slow rave music.  so far lots of old hits remixed down to that 108bpm speed.  I have read more ‘prestigious’ blogs labelling it as slowed down Dutch House

anyways, I have done all of the research for you.  download till your hard drive is full.  I am not going to fill up any of our precious blog space with it because there is already too much (lazy.. )

scatterblog – good mix and 10+ songs

XLR8R – 2 songs

Fool’s Gold – Moombahton Megamix by Dave Nada (some credit him with the invention of this genre)

Gotta Dance Dirty – few songs

DJ Kicks: Kode9

April 22, 2010

another Burial spoof?  maybe

I found this article as I was cruising around the red bull music academy website:

Details have been announced for Kode9‘s edition of DJ-Kicks, due for release this June.

The Hyperdub boss took a no-nonsense approach to assembling the mix, compiling what he describes as “just a snapshot of my DJ sets from the first half of 2010.” The tracklist is heavy on UK funky, broken beat, grime and R&B, but surprisingly light on on the genre Kode9 helped vault into widespread popularity: dubstep.

“[The mix is] definitely not an exploration of my musical heritage, but it’s not all new stuff. It probably signifies something about my relationship to dubstep that the mix only has a few dubstep tunes in it… Unfortunately, I fear some listeners, because of my background, will think that all the tracks are just mutations of dubstep.”

In addition to tracks by Aardvarck, Digital Mystikz, Zomby and Cooly G, the mix will feature an exclusive track by Kode9, entitled “You Don’t Wash.” The compilation will be the third installment of DJ-Kicks this year, following contributions by The Juan Maclean and James Holden.

mike mind (acid)

March 29, 2010

some good acid techno songs (if I can label them like that) by turbo records mike mind.  I found this first song after Tiga played it in his bbc radio one mix last year (I think he mixed it into his song ‘overtime’).  amazing.

Acid Machine

anyways, enjoy some good new songs to bring back those old 1990’s memories.

Mike Mind – Satellite Son

(Here’s a sample of tiga’s ‘overtime’ so you can imagine how nice it goes with acid machine and why I was so excited when I first heard it)
