The real Queen of England

August 22, 2010

With much sadness Mary Anne Hobbs is leaving BBC Radio 1. Darn, she was my go to lady for all the freshest tracks on the planet. There’s only a few shows left before she bows out on Sept 9th so listen up my friends as she is bringing in the heavy weights. Last week she had Skream in the studio, this week Joker on decks, next week Shackelton, then Digital Mystikz. Her final show is a mystery man. I am putting my bets on Flying Lotus, what do you think?

Mary Anne accepted a position at The University of Sheffield where she’s going to be the head of student media. She still plans on DJing and curating the Sonar festival. Much respect goes out to this lady who had me tuning in every week or listening again.

With that being said, Calgary is a great place to be right now for future sound. You can catch a lot of the artists featured on her show playing live in our fine city. As things slow down with summer plans I look forward to hitting the dance floor once again. But for now listen again to MAH’s show and party it up in your living room and enjoy this lovely song!

a few favorites

I randomly stumbled upon a Radiohead remix done by Leftfield. As Idiotheque is definitely my fav Radiohead song, (probably since it’s  their most electronic sounding and  it also doesn’t leave you feeling sad as Thom Yorke is quite capable of doing)  I thought I would share as in my opinion Radiohead and Leftfield are in a  class of their own. I saw Radiohead live in concert at Thunderbird stadium ( 2003)  and the best way to describe it: It Changes your Life!

Idiotheque remix

To follow, here’s a Leftfield classic from the album entitled  Leftism.

Space Shanty

and to finish off, here’s a track from Gemmy that reminds me of Leftfield  because of the the old electronica  beat mixed in new glitchy wonky sounds. Rainbow Roads is included  on Mary Ann Hobbs’ new compilation Wild Angels. If you still aren’t tuning into her show on BBC Radio 1 Wednesday nights, I strongly encourage you to start. …and it will get you saying “maximum respect”

dam funk

June 14, 2009

dam_funk_mah

It was a tough decision, who to see tonight dam funk (pronounced “dame funk”) or skream.  I’ve been meaning to see skream for a while now, and I’m sure he will kill it tonight, however, this decision was all about old vs. new excitement, and I chose new.  Living in Calgary it is not often that an artist comes to town at the same time as I’m discovering them.  I’ve only tuned in to this guy a couple weeks ago.  So it was that kind of excitement when I saw the poster on the street last weekend.  “Seriously? he’s coming next Saturday? I just got his records in the mail yesterday…. damn!”

synth heavy future funk has arrived at just the right time for summer.
